Show Jumping is lots of fun and a sport that lots of people can participate in, once you feel confident about riding you might want to go ahead and start to learn to jump which could lead to you show jumping at local shows and eventually jumping at pony club events, or other groups etc...
Show Jumping does not concentrate on the style of the horse and rider, but that the horse and rider jump a clear round. There are many penalties that can be accrue, these penalties are:
Four faults
for a knockdown. (of jumps)
Three faults
for first refusal (horse won't jump)
Six faults
for a second refusal.
If the horse has three refusals, you will be eliminated.
To complete a clear round it is after takes hours of practice and training by both horse and rider
When show jumping your sitting position is different, the rider rises from the saddle in a forward position, so weight is taken of the horses hindquarters, also the rider has shorter stirrups which aids the rider in the forward position.
Within show jumping the horse is required to obey signals at the slightest touch from the rider.
Once again it is important that the rider as an individual should look at the course and even walk the course on foot, by doing this, it will help the individual to remember the course and also allow them to calculate the strides which their horse will take between the fences, and where it needs to be a short or a long stride (this is altered depending on the particular style of fence)
When show jumping it is required that the rider should wear a show jacket, jodhpurs and a cross country skullcap with a black or navy blue silk or velvet cover.
