Dressage is given this name as it, is the name that was given to the correct training of an individuals horse. Making sure the individuals horse can fully obey and understand the commands that the rider gives.

The aim throughout dressage is that the horse and rider have to work as one, this should be done so that the judge is unaware of the rider giving the horse specific signals.

With dressage you are given a set course and you have to proceed with this once in the ring (however you are not given instructions as to what to do next, this may only happen if you are doing more than one dressage test in one given day.)  With this in mind it is advisable to walk the course before you go into the ring this way you will have a better idea as to what you have to do and when.

The judge overall wants to see that you and your horse work well together, and that your horse is free and willing to move forward and is follow the commands that you give it.

When competing in a dressage competition the rider should wear clean and tidy beige breeches, a shirt and tie (tweed or navy blue jacket is preferred) and well polished boots along with an approved riding hat with chin strap.
Gloves have to be brown, also with dressage you are not allowed to use a whip, if this is a requirement because your horse is slow you may wear spurs.
